Links overview

There are a number of ways to create links on your web site. The method you choose will depend on what types of links you want to group together and where on your page/site you wish to place them.

See also Internal and external links overview.

Ways of creating of links

Child page links

Child page links are displayed by default at the bottom of each of content page that has child pages attached to it. Each time you create a child page, the Title of that page is displayed at the bottom of the parent page. This provides a means of navigating to the child pages when viewing the parent page.

Whether or not these links also get displayed on the section menu is controlled in the Site Design Manager. See Displaying child links in section menu.

Content editor links

If you simply want to create links within the body of your page content, you can do so using the Content Editor - Link tool. This will place a link (internal or external) within the content area of your web page that goes directly to the linked page.

Links created in the content editor window:

Link page type

The Link page type is used to create a single link that can have a number of different properties and characteristics.

Links created using the Link page type:

Quick links page

The Quick Links page type is the most flexible link building feature available in the ACTIVE CM. It allows you to build a page of links comprised of multiple links of different kinds, and from different sources. This is useful for creating lists of News items or What's New links on your site.

Note: The standard installation of the ACTIVE CM does not include the Quick Links page functionality. If you would like more information about this page type, contact your sales representative.

Quick links pagelet

The Quick Links pagelet is the same as the Quick Links page with the exception that, being a pagelet, it can be placed anywhere on your site including in the section menu area, overlapping the header or footer area, or wherever else you choose to place it. By altering your page templates, you can place the pagelet, with its list of links, any where you want.

Attaching children to link pages

It is not recommended that you create child pages on a link page. The purpose of the link page is simply to take the user to a different site or page within a site. If you want to create a sub-menu type link on the section menu, us the Category page type.

Page template tags for displaying links

In order for links to be displayed in the content area of the page, the page template must contain tags for including the link information. Your site administrator can provide further assistance with this. The information pertaining to site formatting is found in the ACTIVE Content Manager Design Guide.

Displaying links in the section menu

For links to appear on the section menu, your site administrator must use the Site Design Manager to set the parent page to include children in the section menu. See Displaying child links in section menu.
